Crackdown on Child Marriages : Village Sarpanch,Marriage hall owners to be held responsible

Kolhapur : Crackdown on Child Marriages The State Women’s Commission Chairperson, Rupali Chakankar, has called for stricter action against child marriages in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. She directed authorities to take action not only against the bride and groom, but also against all participants in the wedding party. This includes the owners of printing presses that print wedding cards, marriage halls and community halls where the weddings are held, as well as the sarpanch and gramsevak of the village where child marriages held.

Chakankar made these remarks during a meeting held at the Shahu Sabhagruha in the District Collector’s Office. The meeting was attended by various officials, including the Superintendent of Police, Additional District Collector, Resident Deputy District Collector, Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Women and Child Development), and District Women and Child Development Officer.

During the meeting, Chakankar emphasized the need for all establishments in the district to set up women’s grievance redressal committees. She also stressed the importance of ensuring clean toilets in all schools, colleges, government, and private offices.

Chakankar urged authorities to take effective measures to address the issue of missing women and provide counseling to prevent eve-teasing, addiction among youth, and youth-related crimes. She emphasized the importance of parents increasing communication with their children to curb crime.

The meeting also discussed the steps taken by the government to reduce crimes against women and the need for citizens to come together as a social responsibility to achieve this goal. Appreciation was expressed for the work of the Bharosa Cell in preventing cases of domestic violence and the Nirbhaya Squad in assisting women in distress.

The meeting reviewed the status of various initiatives, including hostels for working women, one-stop centers, complaint redressal committees, and measures taken to prevent sex determination and abortion.
