Mumbai : Maharashtra Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, made a landmark decision on Wednesday, March 8th, 2023. In a move promoting gender equality, the cabinet mandated that mother’s name will now be compulsory on all government documents issued in the state.

The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step towards ensuring gender equality by making it mandatory to include a mother’s name on all government documents issued in the state. This decision, announced on March 8th, 2023, reflects a growing recognition of the vital role mothers play in families and society.

Previously, only a father’s name was typically included on government documents in Maharashtra. This decision aims to rectify that by acknowledging the importance of mothers and their contributions. It ensures their names are officially documented alongside fathers’, promoting a more balanced representation of parentage.

This historic decision is accompanied by 17 other key measures aimed at improving various sectors in Maharashtra. Here’s a quick look at some of them:

Housing and Infrastructure: Relief measures include waived stamp duty for slum dwellers, homes for workers of closed mills, government guarantees for infrastructure projects, and loans for Mumbai’s development.

Government Departments: Establishment of a separate training center for the State Excise Department, creation of new posts in the GST department, a new Director post for the State Excise Department, and a state-level scheme for new buildings for Law and Justice Department offices.

Education and Skilling: Benefits for judicial officers with LLM degrees and an Institutional Capacity Strengthening Project for district development.

Social Welfare: Land allotment for a Maharashtra Guest House in Ayodhya, inclusion of two government colleges under Dr. Homi Bhabha State University, Mumbai.

Development Projects: Creation of a world-class Mumbai Central Park, extension of electricity subsidy for lift irrigation scheme beneficiaries, upgradation of aided ashram schools, and employment and self-employment schemes for tribals.

Social Justice: Approval for the Maharashtra Transgender Policy 2024.

These decisions are expected to significantly impact the lives of people in Maharashtra. The mandatory inclusion of a mother’s name on government documents is a groundbreaking step towards achieving gender equality.
