Cabinet Approves PM Surya Ghar Yojana with 75021 Crore Outlay

PM Surya Ghar Yojana Boosting Rooftop Solar and Offering Subsidies Up to ₹78,000

New Delhi : In a major push for clean energy and energy independence of india, the Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the PM-Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana with a total outlay of ₹75,021 crore. This ambitious program aims to promote rooftop solar power installations in one crore (ten million) households across India with free electricity.

Anurag Thakur, Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy, hailed the scheme as a “game-changer” for India’s energy landscape. “This initiative will not only provide significant relief to households by reducing their electricity bills, but also contribute significantly to our clean energy goals and create new job opportunities,” he stated.

Key Highlights of the Scheme:

  • Free Electricity: Up to 300 units of free electricity per month will be provided to beneficiary families.
  • Subsidies for Rooftop Solar: The government will offer subsidies of up to 60% for 2 kW rooftop solar systems, decreasing to 40% for systems between 2 kW and 3 kW, with a cap of 3 kW per household. This translates to a subsidy of approximately:
    • ₹30,000 for 1 kW system
    • ₹60,000 for 2 kW system
    • ₹78,000 for 3 kW or higher systems
  • Expected Impact: The program aims to add 30 GW of solar capacity, generate 1000 Billion Units (BUs) of electricity over 25 years, and reduce 720 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions.

Application Process: While specific details are still being finalized, applications for the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana are expected to be available online and offline shortly.

This initiative is a significant step towards India’s clean energy ambitions and is poised to benefit both individual households and the nation as a whole. By providing free electricity and encouraging rooftop solar installations, the PM-Surya Ghar Yojana offers a win-win solution for energy affordability, environmental protection, and job creation.
