Rabid Fox on Rampage: Fear Grips Kolhapur Farmers

Rabid fox on Rampage has unleashed havoc, leaving seven farmers critically injured

Rabid Fox on Rampage Kolhapur : A string of vicious attacks by a rabid fox has plunged the villages of Aurwad, Gaurwad, and Kavtheguland in Shirol taluka into chaos. Over the past four days, the rabid fox has unleashed havoc, leaving seven farmers critically injured. Among the victims are Ashok Mangsule and Amar Jagtap from Aurwad, who fell prey to the ferocious assaults. Additionally, five other farmers from Gaurwad and Kavtheguland have also been wounded by the rabid creature.

The looming terror has deterred laborers from venturing into the fields to harvest sugarcane, exacerbating the already tense situation. With farm laborers reluctant to enter the fields due to the fear of encountering the rabid fox, the disruption in sugarcane harvesting has intensified, further escalating the atmosphere of fear among the farming community.

This recent rampage comes on the heels of a previous incident where sightings of a rabid animal were reported months ago. Now, with the onslaught of attacks by the rabid fox, urgent calls have been made to the forest department to take immediate action and quell the menace posed by the rabid creature. The farming community is on edge as they await swift intervention to address the pressing issue before more lives are endangered. Recently 21 old woman from Kolhapur Succumb to rabies one month after she was bitten by stray dog in city. She has developed symptoms even after taking rabies vaccines.

Rabies Encounter: Safety First!

Rabies is a deadly virus transmitted through the saliva of infected animals. While encountering a rabid animal is uncommon, it’s crucial to prioritize safety if it happens. Here are some key precautions to remember:

DO NOT APPROACH OR HANDLE A WILD ANIMAL: This applies to any wild animal, regardless of how it’s behaving. Wild animals, even seemingly friendly ones, can carry rabies.

KEEP CHILDREN AND PETS AWAY: Ensure children and pets are out of sight and under control. Rabies can be fatal to them as well.

REPORT THE SIGHTING: Contact animal control or wildlife authorities immediately. They can safely capture and test the animal for rabies.

If Bitten:

  • Wash the Wound Immediately: Wash the wound thoroughly with soap and clean water for at least 15 minutes. This can significantly reduce the risk of infection.
  • Seek Medical Attention Immediately: Inform the doctor about the animal encounter and potential rabies exposure. They will determine if post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), a series of vaccinations, is necessary.

Wild Rabies Carriers:

In the US, rabies is most common in raccoons, skunks, foxes, and bats. In India, the primary carriers are dogs, jackals, and monkeys. However, any mammal can contract rabies.

Minimizing Risk:

  • Vaccinate Pets: Keep your dogs and cats up-to-date on their rabies vaccinations.
  • Avoid Contact with Wild Animals: Don’t leave food or garbage outside that might attract wild animals.
  • Admire from Afar: Observe wildlife from a safe distance and avoid any interaction.

By following these precautions, you can significantly reduce the risk of rabies infection. Remember, immediate medical attention is crucial if bitten by any animal, regardless of its rabies status.
