D. Y. Patil University Researchers Develop Breakthrough ‘Antifungal Nail Lacquer’

Kolhapur: Researchers at D. Y. Patil Deemed University, Kolhapur, have achieved a significant breakthrough by developing a novel Antifungal Nail Lacquer to combat Candidal Onychomycosis, a severe form of fungal infection of the nails.

Untreated fungal nail infections can become complex and painful, leading to symptoms like discoloration, thickening, cracking, pain, and swelling of the nails. This condition is often more severe in patients with compromised immunity, diabetes, or those undergoing long-term antibiotic therapy.

The Research Team and Innovation

This pivotal research was conducted under the guidance of Dean Prof. C. D. Lokhande, by a team from the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies—specifically the Departments of Medical Biotechnology and Stem Cell & Regenerative Medicine. The core team included:

  • Prof. Dr. Sankuni Mohan Karupayil
  • Prof. Dr. Abhinandan Patil
  • Associate Professor Dr. Ashwini Kale
  • Research Student Dr. Shivani Patil

The innovative lacquer utilizes Allyl Isothiocyanate (AITC), a compound naturally found in mustard and cruciferous vegetables. Clinical trials have shown that the antifungal properties of AITC effectively penetrate deep into the nail bed, significantly inhibiting the growth of the Candida fungus.

Key Benefits of the Novel Lacquer

The researchers highlight several advantages of this newly developed lacquer:

  • Deep Penetration: Effectively reaches the infection site within the nail.
  • Reduced Treatment Time: Helps shorten the duration required for effective treatment.
  • Strengthened Nails: Promotes the rebuilding and strengthening of damaged nails.
  • Cost-Effective and Safe: Offers a low-cost, safe, and long-lasting alternative to current treatments, potentially reducing the need for daily oral medication.

The researchers believe this novel lacquer has the potential to bring about a significant change in the treatment protocol for Candidal Onychomycosis. An application for a patent based on this research has already been filed.

University officials, including Chancellor Dr. Sanjay D. Patil, Vice President MLA Satej D. Patil, and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Rakesh Kumar Sharma, have extended their congratulations and best wishes to the entire research team for this valuable contribution to medical science.
