Thalassemia : Bone Marrow Transplant boon for patients – Dr. Preeti Mehta

Thalassemia ; patients camp organized at DY Patil Hospital

Kolhapur :The number of Thalassemia patients is increasing in the country and bone marrow transplant can be a boon for them. However, early diagnosis of this disease is necessary for better outcome of treatment, The younger the age at which these treatments are done, the more successful they will be, said Dr. Preeti Mehta, Hemato-oncologist at SRCC Hospital, Mumbai.

She was speaking at the inauguration of a free HLA test and health check-up camp organized for Thalassemia patients jointly by the Pediatric Department of Dr. DY Patil Hospital, Kadamwadi and SRCC Hospital, Mumbai. She guided the parents about Thalassemia, its symptoms, tests and bone marrow transplant treatment. Dr. Preeti Mehta also answered various questions from the parents.

Patients and their parents from Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur, Sindhudurg, Solapur, Osmanabad, Nanded, Ahmednagar and Nipani participated in the camp in large numbers. Free HLA testing was done on this occasion.

Dr. Nivedita Patil, Head of Pediatrics Department informed that free ward and advanced treatment is being provided for Thalassemia patients by the hospital. Dr. Preeti Naik gave guidance on what preventive measures can be taken to prevent Thalassemia. On this occasion, the patients’ lung capacity test was done and red cell antibody test was done by Dr. Suchita Deshmukh. Thalassemia patients are prone to prolonged illness, frequent blood transfusions, daily medication, which can also lead to mental health problems. For this, Dr. Sneha Harshe of the Psychiatry Department of the Hospital conducted their mental test. Dr. Devyani Kulkarni expressed her gratitude.

The camp was guided by Dr. Sanjay D. Patil, Chancellor of DY Patil Deemed University, Vice President of the Institute MLA Satej Patil, Trustee Prithviraj Patil and Vice Chancellor Dr. Rakesh Kumar Mudgal were also present at the movement.
